Our suspicion in this scenario is that this mother was either looking to turn someone else's birthday party into her own family event or she was trying to stir the pot all along. In other words, no, the author of this story is not in the wrong in this scenario. After all, throwing birthday parties is no small feat. It's expensive and stressful. The last thing you want is to have to front more money for guests who aren't even wanted, especially by the person whose birthday it is!
If the author did not go out of her way to give this lady the heads up that she was going to have to pay for her other kids' food and drink out of pocket beforehand, who knows what would have happened? Those teens probably would have eaten the whole food platter before any of the actual guests got to have a bite of their own.
